UEFA boycotts FIFA tournaments over Infantino's World Cup plans
NYON - UEFA has announced a provisional boycott of the FIFA World Cup and all other FIFA tournaments. The decision follows an emergency meeting of UEFA's 55 member associations, according to an official UEFA statement.
The football world has been shaken by plans presented by FIFA earlier this week. The global governing body wants to attract private investors by selling shares in a newly created company that would manage all commercial activities related to the FIFA World Cup.
UEFA responded with a clear message to FIFA: "The World Cup is not for sale."
"No national team affiliated with UEFA will participate in any FIFA competition as long as these proposals remain on the table," UEFA said, adding that it "unanimously and unequivocally" rejects FIFA's proposal.
The boycott will remain in effect until the proposal is completely withdrawn and binding guarantees are provided that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.
"Let there be no doubt: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with absolute determination," the European football body added. "Some things are simply too important to be sold."
"The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football's greatest sporting legacies, built by generations of players, national teams and supporters from every continent," UEFA stated. "And as long as Europe has a voice, it will never be for sale."
