ORANJESTAD — Author and historical researcher Bob Harms presented his book Echoes of Africa: Afro-Creole Belief Systems of Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba at the National Archives of Aruba on October 30, attracting a large audience.
The book explores Afro-Creole spiritual beliefs and traditions across Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, examining how African heritage evolved over generations through interaction with Indigenous and European cultural influences.
The presentation sparked an in-depth discussion about transculturation and Aruban traditions such as Ocho Dia, Jucan and Curanderia, highlighting their place in the island's cultural heritage.
Publication of the book was made possible through funding from the Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden and the University of Aruba.
