ORANJESTAD — Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Geoffrey Wever has presented a proposal to the Council of Ministers to gradually replace government vehicles with electric models, aiming to reduce public spending and dependence on imported fuel.

The proposal follows the EU-funded Green Overseas project, which received €190,000 in funding. The study examined approximately 547 government vehicles and found that electric vehicles could reduce total ownership costs by up to 15% in certain departments.

Experts recommend electrifying 50% of the government fleet by 2030, while Wever is considering a more ambitious target, depending on technical and financial feasibility.

The transition would require charging infrastructure, coordination with ELMAR and DOW, and responsible battery management.

The proposal still needs to be translated into formal government policy and implementation.
