ORANJESTAD — Justice Minister Arthur Dowers attributes the Aruba Police Force's (KPA) staffing shortage to years of insufficient police training and recruitment under the previous administration.
According to Dowers, the force currently has approximately 80 fewer officers than in 2017. The shortage forces officers to work excessive overtime, reducing rest periods and affecting operational capacity.
The minister expressed condolences following a recent violent incident, emphasizing that police understaffing cannot justify what happened.
Dowers announced that several new police training classes are underway and investments are being made in the Police Academy. He also plans to introduce legislation allowing preventive intervention in situations threatening public safety.
