Aruba prepares next consultation on 30x30 marine protection goal

ORANJESTAD — The Department of Nature and Environment (DNM), Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF) and Blue Marine Foundation (BMF) are preparing a new round of stakeholder consultations in October as part of Aruba’s 30x30 marine protection process.

Following the first consultation round, the working group spent several months on technical analysis, data collection, mapping and the development of different scenarios to assess how Aruba could protect more than 30% of its marine environment by 2030.

The process covers both territorial waters and offshore areas, including the exclusive economic zone. DNM stressed that no final law has been established yet. The goal is first to gather scientific evidence and stakeholder feedback so that any future legislation can be based on solid information.

The Aruba Conservation Foundation emphasized that marine protection is important not only for biodiversity but also for Aruba’s economy, while the Blue Marine Foundation is providing technical expertise and international experience.

During the October consultations, stakeholders will be able to review the different scenarios and provide input before the government determines the next steps.
