American Airlines upgrades cabins; Aruba travelers could benefit

MIAMI - American Airlines is planning a major overhaul of its onboard experience as it competes for more premium travelers. The carrier says more than 800 narrowbody aircraft will eventually receive new entertainment systems with 4K seatback screens, Bluetooth connectivity and USB-C charging.

The airline is also expanding premium seating, including first class and extra-legroom Main Cabin Extra seats. Premium seats currently account for about 25% of seats on American’s narrowbody departures, but that share is expected to rise to around 40% in the coming years.

American also plans to begin installing high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi starting in 2027. New aircraft with the upgraded screens are expected to arrive in the second half of 2028, while retrofits of existing planes will begin later that year and continue into the early 2030s.

For Aruba, the changes could be relevant because American Airlines remains an important carrier for travel to and from the island. While the company has not said which routes will see the upgrades first, passengers flying American on Aruba services could eventually benefit from a more modern and more premium onboard experience.
