Infant mortality in Curaçao remains more than three times higher than in the Netherlands

WILLEMSTAD – Infant mortality in Curaçao remained virtually unchanged in 2025 and continues to be more than three times higher than in the Netherlands. Newsportal Curacao.nu reports that according to the Central Bureau of Statistics, 12 children died before reaching their first birthday, equal to 11.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. In the Netherlands, the latest available rate is 3.3 per 1,000.

Although the number of infant deaths declined slightly compared with 2024, the mortality rate remained almost unchanged because there were also fewer births. The report does not identify the specific causes of the deaths, although previous health data point to premature birth, low birth weight and pregnancy or birth complications as common risk factors. Compared with much of the Caribbean region, Curaçao's infant mortality rate remains below the regional average.
