Analysis: Twelve years later, NoticiaCla has the same mission—but a new look

It feels like only yesterday that I published the very first edition of NoticiaCla, an independent news platform created to provide Aruba with responsible, reliable journalism. Yet twelve years have passed, and looking back, one of the most memorable details isn't just the launch itself—it's the date.

NoticiaCla officially went live on July 2, 2014. Not July 1, as would have seemed logical for the start of a new month or a new project. July 2. And there was a very practical reason for that.

Just as today, the world was immersed in the excitement of the FIFA World Cup. (Although, admittedly, it has become a little less exciting for me now that both the Netherlands and Curaçao have been eliminated.) Twelve years ago, however, the tournament was also in full swing, and an important World Cup match was scheduled for July 1. I simply believed that few people would attend a media launch that day.

So the official presentation was postponed until July 2, at Divi Links.

At the time, the Minister responsible for Telecommunications was Mike de Meza, who had the honor of pressing the button that officially launched NoticiaCla. Two respected friends from the media industry— the late Ruben Garcia, and Ralph Maduro of Power FM—believed in the project from the very beginning and even broadcasted the event live.

Another person who was there that day and who continues to support me today is columnist and island personality  Rona Coster. I also remain deeply grateful to everyone who contributed during those early days, including webmaster Leopold Laclé, whose work was instrumental in developing both the website and the mobile application.

Today, we stand twelve years further along that journey.

A different way to celebrate an anniversary

Traditionally, I celebrate major milestones such as five and ten years.

For our fifth anniversary, we celebrated with cupcakes. Five years later, for our tenth anniversary, I produced a video featuring well-known individuals who have supported NoticiaCla throughout the years.

This time, however, I chose a different approach.

Instead of organizing another celebration, I decided that the anniversary itself should mark the beginning of a new chapter.

Things are changing faster than ever. Technology is evolving. Reader expectations are evolving. The media landscape is evolving. It felt like the right moment not simply to celebrate what NoticiaCla has accomplished, but to prepare it for what comes next.

What began as a relatively modest idea—refreshing the logo—quickly evolved into something much larger.

Today, NoticiaCla is introducing not only a new visual identity, but also two additional languages: English and Dutch.

Both languages had previously been part of the platform. At the time, however, we simply were not ready to sustain them.

Today, we are.

And this time, they are here to stay.

For a while, I considered adding only English. The reasoning seemed straightforward: most Dutch speakers also understand English, whereas English speakers generally do not understand Dutch.

Still, after listening carefully to advice from many people, I ultimately decided to reintroduce Dutch as well. It gives our content additional depth and credibility, while allowing us to reach a broader audience both within and beyond the Kingdom.

The transformation extends beyond language.

Our mobile application has been updated. Several services have been restored. Dedicated Facebook pages have been launched for both the English- and Dutch-language editions, recognizing that many readers consume their news primarily through social media.

The same strategy is expanding across Instagram, YouTube and other digital platforms.

Together, these changes position NoticiaCla not only for today, but for the years ahead.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS A TOOL—NOT A REPLACEMENT

No discussion about the future of journalism would be complete without mentioning artificial intelligence.

Like many news organizations around the world, we have begun incorporating AI into our daily workflow.

But we do so with one important principle: the journalist must remain in control.

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that allows us to work more efficiently and deliver more content. It should however, never replace editorial judgment, critical thinking or responsibility.

Ultimately, someone must remain behind the wheel.

That responsibility becomes even greater when your slogan is "News you can trust."

For us, those words are more than a marketing phrase—they are an obligation.

ANALYSIS BECOMES A PERMANENT FEATURE

One development that has surprised me over the past few years has been the growing popularity of the analytical pieces I publish.

Initially, they were occasional opinion articles intended to provide context to the day's headlines. I never expected them to become one of the platform's most valued products.

But readers had other ideas.

Demand continued to grow, and today analysis has become an integral part of NoticiaCla's editorial identity rather than an occasional feature.

News tells us what happened.

Analysis seeks to explain why it happened, where events may be heading, and perhaps most importantly, what solutions or alternatives deserve consideration. It offers readers context in a world where information travels faster than ever, but understanding often struggles to keep pace.

From now on, these analyses will also be available in Dutch and English, allowing a broader audience to engage with discussions about Aruba, the Caribbean and the Kingdom.

A PLATFORM SHAPED BY ITS READERS

You may already have noticed that our content has evolved.

There is more of it. It is more diverse. It explores a wider range of topics than before.

That evolution did not happen by accident.

It happened because you—our readers and our advertisers—told us what you wanted.

And we listened.

Today, NoticiaCla enters a new phase, built around new ideas, new technologies and new opportunities, while remaining committed to the same values that inspired its launch twelve years ago.

The logo may have changed.

The languages may have expanded.

The technology has certainly improved.

But the mission remains exactly the same: to deliver journalism that is independent, responsible and worthy of the trust our audience places in us every day.

A WORD OF THANKS

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to two groups of people.

First, to you, our readers, who continue to choose NoticiaCla as part of your daily lives.

And second, to our advertisers and business partners, whose confidence in our work has made this journey possible.

Your trust motivates us to continue improving, innovating and growing.

It allows us to invest in better journalism, better technology and better ways of serving Aruba and our expanding international audience.

Twelve years ago, NoticiaCla began with a simple idea.

Today, it begins another chapter.

To everyone who has been part of this journey—thank you.

The best, I believe, is still ahead.
