ORANJESTAD / KRALENDIJK — A new report by the Law Enforcement Council concludes that the screening process for justice personnel in the Caribbean Netherlands is inadequate, leaving critical institutions exposed to significant integrity and security risks.

The investigation examined the Public Prosecutor's Office BES, the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force, the correctional institution, the Child Protection Board and the Probation Foundation.

According to the report, employees are sometimes allowed to begin work before their background screening has been completed, potentially giving unscreened personnel access to confidential information and sensitive responsibilities.

The Council also criticizes the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security for failing to introduce regulations that would require enhanced reliability screening for police officers. As a result, most officers have never undergone this more rigorous form of vetting.

The report further concludes that there is no clear central leadership overseeing the screening process and urges the Dutch government to take immediate action to strengthen integrity checks and eliminate vulnerabilities within the Caribbean Netherlands' justice system.
