60-year-old detainee dies in custody at San Nicolas Police Station

SAN NICOLAS – A 60-year-old man born in Aruba died Wednesday evening while being held in custody at the San Nicolas Police Station.

According to an official statement from the Aruba Police Force, officers conducting a routine check of detainees at approximately 8:20 p.m. found the man unresponsive inside his cell.

The officer in charge and the police dispatch center were immediately notified, after which the appropriate authorities were informed. The District Chief, a forensic physician, the Technical Police Unit and the National Criminal Investigation Department (Landsrecherche) responded to the scene to begin an investigation.

Representatives of the Victim Support Department also attended to provide guidance and assistance to the family during this difficult time.

The circumstances surrounding the man's death are currently under investigation by the Landsrecherche.

The Aruba Police Force extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
