DEN HAAG – Aruba, Curacao and St Maarten shouldn’t expect the creation of a ‘dispute commission’ anytime soon. The plan to have an independent commission or judge mediate disputes between the three Dutch Caribbean islands and the Dutch government has been put ‘on hold’, yet again. Dutch secretary of state Raymond Knops says he has other priorities, such as the reconstruction of hurricane damaged St Martin.

DISPUTES

The three islands have longed for this ‘dispute commission’, as political disputes keep piling up with the Dutch government. One such dispute made former Aruba Prime Minister Mike Eman go on a brief high profile hunger strike when the Dutch government disapproved of the islands budget in 2014. Island government representatives say the Dutch are afraid to loose power to the islands.
