Dowers: New prison now a necessity as Aruba explores UNOPS support

ORANJESTAD — Justice Minister Arthur Dowers is continuing discussions with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) about possible cooperation on a new correctional facility for Aruba.

During a visit to Curaçao for the Justitieel Vierlandenoverleg, Dowers met with UNOPS Deputy Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Giuseppe Mancinelli.

UNOPS has experience with correctional infrastructure, including the new prison project at Point Blanche in Sint Maarten, where it provides technical assistance, project management and oversight.

According to Dowers, conditions at KIA mean that a modern correctional facility is no longer merely an option, but a necessity. Talks with UNOPS will continue to explore possible technical support.
