Herdé: Afl. 300,000 homes are out of reach for many families
ORANJESTAD – With construction costs approaching Afl. 3,000 per square meter, a relatively small 100-square-meter home can cost close to Afl. 300,000, an amount many families in Aruba are unable to finance.
Minister René Herdé addressed the issue during an interview with Tito Laclé on Noticiacla LIVE, saying the government is working to adjust land regulations to make housing more affordable.
Among the changes being considered are smaller residential plots and a reduction in the minimum percentage of land that owners are required to build on. According to Herdé, this could make it possible to construct homes of approximately 60 to 80 square meters.
The government is also in talks with banks to explore mortgage products that could make financing in the range of approximately Afl. 175,000 to Afl. 200,000 more accessible to families with average incomes.
Herdé said current market conditions are forcing Aruba to consider smaller and more practical homes.
