MEP demands urgent debate over Gerlien Croes HOFA law statements

ORANJESTAD – The parliamentary group of the Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP) has urgently requested a public meeting of Parliament to seek clarification from Minister Gerlien Croes about statements concerning the Kingdom Act HOFA and internal coalition agreements.

In a letter dated August 18, 2026, addressed to Parliament President Juan Sneek, MEP says statements made by Croes on August 17 raise important questions about the nature and substance of agreements between the coalition parties.

According to the letter, Croes stated publicly that once a party nominates a ministerial candidate, that person becomes part of the Government and may have an agreement with their own party, while at the same time being bound by the governing agreement. He added that if disagreements arise, the parties must consider how the governing agreement can continue to be upheld.

MEP argues that these remarks are particularly significant in the context of the Kingdom Act HOFA and the potential consequences if a coalition party is no longer willing or able to comply with agreements that were made.

The opposition faction wants Croes to explain specifically what agreements were reached within the governing accord or between the coalition parties regarding the HOFA legislation.

MEP also wants clarification of Croes’ statement suggesting that the collapse of such an agreement could mean there is “no government anymore,” as well as how such political agreements relate to Parliament’s independent constitutional responsibilities and the individual responsibility of ministers.

Given what MEP describes as the major societal and constitutional importance of the issue, the faction is asking Parliament to schedule the public meeting urgently and to invite Minister Croes to provide an explanation.
