St. Maarten wants future of Dutch Kingdom at center of IPKO 2027
PHILLIPSBURG - St. Maarten’s Parliament wants the future of the Dutch Kingdom to become the central theme of IPKO 2027, scheduled for January 13–15 in St. Maarten. The proposal would focus on how relations among the four countries of the Kingdom should evolve, taking into account the colonial past, power imbalances and the democratic deficit.
St. Maarten wants the discussion linked to a Kingdom Conference planned for late 2026. Parliament believes the countries should examine the origins of the Kingdom, the history of slavery and the continued influence of historical colonial relations on present-day decision-making.
The aim is to work toward a shared vision for the Kingdom’s future, while also addressing financial challenges and shortages in human capital. Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten are expected to coordinate common issues during tripartite meetings ahead of IPKO.
