Super El Niño could bring drought and more heat to Aruba

MIAMI - An exceptionally strong El Niño could have a significant impact on Aruba and the other ABC islands. Rising Pacific Ocean temperatures typically lead to stronger wind shear and more stable atmospheric conditions over the Caribbean.

For Aruba, this could mean less rainfall, more dry days and higher-than-average temperatures. The southern Caribbean, particularly Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, could face an increased risk of drought, with dry conditions potentially extending into part of the following year.

El Niño also tends to suppress tropical cyclone development in the Caribbean through stronger wind shear, drier air, more Saharan dust and stronger trade winds.

However, reduced hurricane activity does not mean there is no hurricane or storm risk, and Aruba should remain prepared throughout the season.
