MIAMI - American Airlines is temporarily overstaffed and is asking 1,205 flight attendants to voluntarily take one month of unpaid leave. Employees who participate will retain benefits such as standby travel privileges.

The airline says demand is declining earlier than usual after the peak season, partly due to sharply higher fuel costs. American Airlines also recently hired around 2,000 new flight attendants, more than it currently needs.
