Arends-Reyes (AVP):Compost Alliance aims to turn organic waste into a resource for Aruba

ORANJESTAD - Parliamentarian Jennifer Arends-Reyes has highlighted the potential of Compost Alliance, an Iberostar initiative bringing together hotels and other partners, including Aruba Airport Authority, to turn food scraps and other organic waste into compost.

Arends-Reyes, chair of Parliament’s Tourism Committee, joined Tourism Minister Wendrick Cicilia at a meeting at Alto Vista Winery to learn more about the project.

According to Arends-Reyes, the initiative is a practical example of a circular economy: material that would normally be discarded can instead be processed and reused for agriculture, nature and the maintenance of green areas.

She said Aruba’s tourism industry generates a significant amount of waste every day, making cooperation between the public and private sectors increasingly important to reduce waste, expand reuse and make tourism more sustainable.

Arends-Reyes said initiatives such as Compost Alliance demonstrate that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
