KIA controls foil attempt to smuggle drugs into prison

ORANJESTAD – Alert KIA prison staff detected and prevented an attempt to smuggle drugs into the facility during a routine ice delivery.

Justice Minister Arthur Dowers said prison personnel noticed suspicious behavior surrounding the delivery and acted immediately. The case is now under investigation to determine exactly what happened, whether additional people were involved and whether the attempted smuggling was part of a broader operation.

Dowers praised KIA employees for their vigilance and stressed that attempts to bring drugs or other prohibited items into the prison will not be tolerated.

“It does not matter whether the attempt comes from outside or whether someone on the inside is involved. Everyone entering KIA must understand that there are rules and controls that must be respected,” the minister said.

Authorities are also maintaining strict controls against other forms of prison contraband, including mobile phones and prohibited objects that could undermine order and security inside the facility.

Dowers stressed that anyone granted access to KIA for work, deliveries or other services may not misuse that access to bring prohibited items into the prison. If the investigation identifies others involved, authorities will take action in accordance with the law.
