Powerful 7.4 earthquake strikes Colombia; injuries reported in Choco
BOGOTA – A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on Monday morning, August 10, with its epicenter near San Jose del Palmar in the department of Choco, according to the Colombian Geological Service.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:34 a.m. at a depth of 96 kilometers. The shaking was felt across large parts of the country, including Bogota, Medellin, the Coffee Region, Tolima, Huila, Valle del Cauca and Manizales. Buildings were evacuated in several cities as a precaution.
Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba reported several injuries in the department as well as serious damage to buildings in Quibdo. Authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage.
At approximately 8:18 a.m., a magnitude 4.8 aftershock was recorded near San Jose del Palmar.
Colombian authorities continue to assess the situation and are urging residents to remain calm and rely on official information as concerns remain about possible additional aftershocks.
