Thomasia (AVP) calls for strong leadership for KIA's future

ORANJESTAD – AVP parliamentarian Otami Thomasia says modernizing Aruba's Correctional Institution (KIA) requires more than a new building. According to him, lasting improvements depend on investing in leadership and the staff responsible for maintaining security and order.

Thomasia noted that correctional officers continue to face staff shortages, excessive overtime and growing pressure, which can affect the institution's overall performance. He called for stronger human resource management and better support for employees.

He also stressed that rehabilitation should remain a central part of KIA's future, arguing that education, job training, psychological care and addiction treatment are investments in public safety that help reduce repeat offending.

Thomasia concluded that a stronger KIA depends on effective leadership, motivated staff and a correctional system that balances discipline with rehabilitation.
