La Guaira still struggling 15 days after earthquake

LA GUAIRA – Fifteen days after the devastating twin earthquakes struck Venezuela, La Guaira continues to face a humanitarian crisis. Hope of finding more survivors has nearly disappeared as rescue efforts have shifted toward recovering victims and clearing debris.

The number of volunteers and donations has declined significantly, leaving most recovery operations in the hands of government agencies and international aid organizations. Heavy machinery is now being used extensively in the search and recovery effort.

Thousands of displaced residents remain in temporary shelters along the streets while awaiting permanent housing. Many buildings have been declared structurally unsafe and will have to be demolished, while much of the local economy remains at a standstill.

Authorities are also continuing the identification of victims. More than 300 bodies have been buried in a dedicated cemetery, with relatives using a special identification system to locate missing loved ones.
