THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Esther Ouwehand has announced that she will step down as leader and parliamentary chair of the Party for the Animals, ending a tenure that saw the Dutch political movement expand its influence while championing issues related to animal welfare, environmental protection and social justice.

Ouwehand will be succeeded by Christine Teunissen, a member of the Dutch Parliament who has long been viewed as one of the party’s leading figures. Despite relinquishing the leadership role, Ouwehand will remain a member of the Dutch House of Representatives.

Teunissen, 40, said she was honored to take over the leadership of the party and emphasized that protecting animals, nature and vulnerable communities remains more important than ever.

“The challenges we face require a strong voice for those who cannot speak for themselves,” she said, outlining her commitment to continuing the party’s core mission.

Ouwehand has led the Party for the Animals since 2019, guiding the organization through a period marked by both political successes and internal challenges. During her tenure, she became one of the most recognizable advocates in Dutch politics for animal rights and environmental causes.

Reflecting on her years as party leader, Ouwehand acknowledged the personal and professional demands of the role, describing it as an intense period that required significant dedication and resilience.

She said the effort had been worthwhile because of the progress made in advancing policies aimed at protecting animals, preserving nature and supporting vulnerable groups.

Although she is stepping away from the party’s top leadership position, Ouwehand said she intends to remain actively involved in legislative work. Her focus in Parliament will include two major proposals: one aimed at reducing the scale of industrial livestock production and another designed to further limit animal suffering during the slaughter process.

The leadership transition comes as the Party for the Animals seeks to maintain its position within the Dutch political landscape while continuing to push for stronger environmental and animal welfare policies under Teunissen’s leadership.
