ORANJESTAD — Member of Parliament Eduard Pieters (PPA) has questioned the Aruban government's transparency regarding its proposed minimum wage increase, claiming that Parliament has yet to receive an economic report repeatedly cited by the government.
During a press conference, Pieters said the study, reportedly commissioned from the Economisch Bureau van Amsterdam, should be made available so lawmakers can independently assess the economic consequences of the proposed wage increase.
“If there is a study, present it,” Pieters stated, questioning how Parliament can scrutinize government decisions without access to the underlying analysis and recommendations.
Pieters also demanded clarity on the implementation plan, consultations with the business sector and potential economic risks for workers and employers.
He stressed that PPA supports a responsible minimum wage increase but insists that government decisions must be based on verifiable economic evidence.
“We are not requesting information to delay a decision. We are requesting it to fulfill our responsibility as Parliament,” Pieters concluded.
