THE HAGUE — The Dutch government has nominated former central bank governor Klaas Knot to become the next president of the European Central Bank (ECB), following Christine Lagarde's announcement that she will step down on February 7, 2027, ahead of schedule.
Knot headed De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) from 2011 to 2025, gaining 14 years of experience leading the Dutch central bank. The Dutch Finance Ministry considers him a suitable successor to Lagarde.
Eurozone countries have until Friday, November 6, to submit nominations. European finance ministers will review the candidates on November 9, with a final decision expected in December.
The successful candidate must secure support from at least 16 of the eurozone's 21 countries, representing at least 65% of its population.
