THE HAGUE — Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten welcomed Aruba’s Prime Minister Mike Eman in The Hague today, October 29. During their meeting, the two leaders discussed several important issues affecting Aruba, including tourism, the economic situation, the well-being of the population and geopolitical developments in the Caribbean region. On his Facebook page, Jetten expressed his appreciation for Eman, acknowledging his political career and dedication to Aruba. “Aruba’s Prime Minister Mike Eman has devoted his entire life to his beautiful island,” Jetten wrote. With these words, the Dutch leader recognized Eman’s longstanding commitment to serving Aruba.
Jetten mentions generational transition
One notable detail in Jetten’s Facebook post was his reference to Mike Eman’s political future. “Soon he will pass the baton to the next generation, but his passion remains as strong as ever.” With this statement, Jetten referred to the upcoming generational transition in political leadership while emphasizing that Eman’s passion for Aruba remains unchanged. His comments come as the AVP party undergoes a leadership transition following Wendrick Cicilia’s appointment as party leader in October.
Tourism, economy and well-being
According to Jetten, the two leaders exchanged views on several issues directly affecting Aruba. Topics included the future of tourism, the economic situation and the importance of broad-based prosperity, a concept that focuses not only on economic growth but also on citizens’ quality of life and overall well-being. This subject is particularly relevant to Aruba’s ongoing debate about the future of tourism, as increasing attention is being paid to how economic growth can benefit the community as a whole.
Geopolitical developments in the Caribbean
Another topic discussed during the meeting was the geopolitical situation in the Caribbean region and its potential consequences for Aruba. “We also discussed geopolitical developments in the Caribbean region and their implications for Aruba,” Jetten confirmed. The issue is particularly important for Aruba, given its geographical location in the Caribbean and international developments that could affect security, the economy and regional stability. However, Jetten did not disclose whether any concrete decisions were made on these matters during the meeting.
Kingdom Summit in Sint Maarten
Jetten and Eman also discussed preparations for the upcoming Kingdom Summit, scheduled for November 17 and 18, 2026, in Sint Maarten. During the summit, the prime ministers of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands will meet to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation among the four countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Each country will present its own State of the Nation, highlighting its developments, challenges and opportunities for further cooperation. According to Jetten, the Kingdom Summit represents an important opportunity to strengthen relations among the countries.
“Nos ta un Reino!”
Jetten concluded his Facebook post with a message expressing his appreciation for working with Mike Eman. “Always a pleasure working together. Nos ta un Reino!” By using the Papiamento expression meaning “We are one Kingdom,” the Dutch prime minister emphasized the ties between Aruba and the Netherlands and the importance he attaches to cooperation within the Kingdom. The meeting took place just weeks before the Kingdom Summit, where the future of cooperation among the Kingdom’s countries will be a central topic. Although Jetten’s post highlighted the positive atmosphere of the meeting, no concrete agreements or new decisions were announced regarding the issues discussed.
