MADRID — At least 64 people have died and 55 others have been hospitalized following a collision between two passenger trains in Spain, according to the latest figures attributed to local authorities in the supplied report.
The accident occurred Wednesday morning, October 28, on the high-speed railway between Madrid and Andalusia, near Los Yébenes and Urda. A Renfe AVE train reportedly struck the rear of another train that had stopped because of a signaling problem.
Two carriages derailed and fell down an embankment. Approximately 550 passengers were aboard the two trains. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Investigators are examining whether a signaling failure and possible human error contributed to the disaster. Rail services have been suspended, while hospitals have issued urgent appeals for blood donations.
This is Spain's third major railway accident in 2026, raising renewed concerns about railway safety.
