BRASILIA — Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has left the country with his wife and two daughters, reportedly heading to the United States just two days after losing the presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Lula won the runoff with nearly 52% of the vote, but Bolsonaro refuses to concede and is demanding that the election results be annulled.
His departure follows a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports amid a money laundering investigation. Authorities are also investigating possible illegal foreign financing of his presidential campaign. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.
CNN Brasil and Reuters report that he is heading to the United States, although exactly how he managed to leave Brazil remains unclear. Argentine authorities say they have no record of him entering their country.
His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also traveled to the United States after losing the 2022 election. He was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in an attempted coup.
