WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's administration has outlined a political transition plan for Venezuela that envisions interim President Delcy Rodríguez leaving office in 2027 to make way for presidential elections.

The plan involves three main steps. First, replace the Supreme Court (TSJ) before the end of 2026. Second, reform the National Electoral Council (CNE) to ensure more transparent elections and prevent candidates from being excluded. Finally, Rodríguez would declare the presidency vacant, triggering a constitutional six-month period for holding elections.

The proposal is part of negotiations between the Chavista government and an opposition faction led by Dinorah Figuera. Opposition leader María Corina Machado, who recently returned to Venezuela, has not joined these talks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Washington would maintain pressure to ensure the transition proceeds, including through economic sanctions if the process is obstructed.

No official election date has been announced.
