ORANJESTAD — Economisch Bureau Amsterdam recommends targeted electricity discounts for low-income households as part of its strategy to reduce poverty in Aruba.

According to its October 2025 report, average monthly household electricity costs were Afl. 263.67. A proposed 40% discount on the first 500 kWh of consumption could reduce total electricity bills for eligible households by approximately 26%.

The estimated annual cost of the electricity support program is Afl. 12.5 million.

The report also recommends considering assistance with cooking gas after the price of a 100-pound cylinder increased from Afl. 60 to Afl. 80.

Researchers emphasize that subsidies should primarily benefit vulnerable households and recommend independent regulation of electricity tariffs. Read the report HERE.
