BRASILIA — President Lula da Silva has won the presidential election against Flávio Bolsonaro after a tight race, according to the electoral authority. The victory gives Lula a fourth term to pursue his social and progressive agenda.
A runoff was necessary because neither candidate secured an absolute majority in the first round. Voting was extended by two hours because of transport problems and heavy rain.
