THE HAGUE — The Netherlands plans to acquire anti-ship missiles to strengthen its military defence in the Caribbean. The Defence Ministry confirmed the plans in parliamentary answers but did not disclose the type, quantity, deployment locations or operational timeline.
The reinforcement also includes a permanent marine unit, an air-warning radar, counter-drone systems and additional flying hours for the Coast Guard’s Dash 8 reconnaissance aircraft. The Coast Guard will gain nearly 80 additional positions, while Caribbean military personnel will receive more equipment and weapons.
Meanwhile, a national security assessment warns that both instability in Venezuela and US military operations could pose risks to Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
Defence attributes the investments to deteriorating international security. However, it has not confirmed a direct link between the missile purchase and tensions surrounding Venezuela or US military actions.
