ORANJESTAD — In an opinion piece published in Trouw, Gian Sakoetoe calls on Dutch media to provide consistent coverage of the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. He argues that many Dutch people know more about foreign politics than developments within their own Kingdom.

He notes that Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are autonomous countries within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius are part of the Netherlands. Decisions made in The Hague on minimum wages and social provisions directly affect residents of the latter three islands.

Sakoetoe says coverage should include education, housing and economic security, alongside corruption and political crises. He also urges media to give island residents a stronger voice and scrutinize whether Dutch politicians fulfil their promises.
