ORANJESTAD — Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF) is urging the government to halt construction near watercourses and sensitive natural areas until experts have assessed environmental safeguards and those measures are in place.
The foundation has submitted formal objections concerning Burubundu Residences near Spaans Lagoen, Wanglo Condominiums near Saliña Malmok and the Iberosol hotel project at Arashi. According to ACF, these developments could disrupt natural water flows, cause pollution and erosion, and fragment habitats.
ACF seeks clarification on permits, independent environmental impact assessments and protection of flora and fauna. It acknowledges the need for more housing but insists that development must respect nature and spatial planning.
The foundation also proposes ecological buffer zones, more comprehensive environmental legislation and public mapping of important ecological areas. Conservation Director Natasha Silva stresses that protection must cover entire ecosystems and their connections, with responsible planning from the outset.
