ORANJESTAD — University of Aruba researcher Eric Mijts will bring a Caribbean perspective to Onderwijsdag 2026 in the Netherlands, focusing on how geography education can better reflect the islands' historical, economic and environmental realities.

Mijts will highlight examples such as the former Lago refinery in San Nicolas, which drove Aruba's economy for nearly a century, and Bonaire's historic salt pans to illustrate the impact of economic activity and colonial history.

His presentation will also address dependence on imports, geopolitical tensions involving Venezuela, sustainability challenges and environmental protection.

The goal is to help Dutch educators present a more complete picture of the Caribbean, beyond tourism, turquoise waters and beaches.
