ORANJESTAD — Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are jointly developing a new dispute resolution mechanism to ensure fair and independent handling of disagreements within the Dutch Kingdom.
During a tripartite meeting this week, the countries raised concerns about the imbalance of power in the Kingdom Council of Ministers, where Dutch ministers substantially outnumber Caribbean representatives. This according to the Nu.cw portal.
Curaçao parliamentarian Quincy Girigorie (PAR) emphasized that the mechanism must protect the Caribbean countries against Dutch dominance.
A previous proposal was rejected in 2019 because the Netherlands could still disregard advice from the Council of State.
The countries are now seeking stronger guarantees of independence and equal protection ahead of January's Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) in Sint Maarten.
