ORANJESTAD — The MEP parliamentary faction has submitted questions to the Prime Minister seeking clarification over reports that Aruba did not grant landing permission to a flight intended to carry Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado. International reports said Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire did not grant landing permission for the private flight, but it remains publicly unclear which authority made the decision in Aruba.
MEP wants confirmation that an official landing request was made, whether it was rejected, who made that decision and on what legal basis.
The faction is also asking whether there was consultation with Venezuela, the Netherlands, the United States or other countries, and whether diplomatic or political pressure played any role.
According to MEP, transparency and accountability are particularly important when decisions may affect Aruba’s international position and regional relations.
The opposition faction said it will continue exercising its parliamentary oversight role to obtain full clarity on what occurred.
