Coast Guard detains suspect in copper pipe theft near refinery
ORANJESTAD — The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard detained a suspect early Saturday, September 26, after receiving a report of suspicious activity near the refinery.
At the time, a Metal Shark patrol unit was operating at sea. The Maritime Operations Center directed the vessel toward the refinery while also requesting assistance from a Coast Guard Dash-8 aircraft.
The aircraft located two people and guided the marine unit to their position. As Coast Guard personnel approached, one suspect was detained while the other fled.
According to the Coast Guard, the individuals were involved in stealing several copper pipes. The detained suspect was handed over to the Aruba Police Force (KPA), which will continue the investigation.
The Coast Guard thanked the community for reporting the suspicious activity and reminded the public to call 913 in case of maritime emergencies or unusual activity.
