King Willem-Alexander and PM Jetten to visit Statia for 250th anniversary of First Salute
ORANJESTAD — King Willem-Alexander, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and State Secretary Eric van der Burg will visit Sint Eustatius in November to attend the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of The First Salute.
A celebration will be held at Fort Oranje on Sunday, November 15. The official commemoration will take place on Monday, November 16, during Statia Day, the island’s annual public holiday.
The First Salute refers to the moment on November 16, 1776, when Fort Oranje answered the salute of the American ship Andrew Doria with cannon fire. The United States regards the event as the first recognition of its independence by a foreign power.
The salute took place several months after the U.S. Declaration of Independence, while the American War of Independence was still underway.
