WEB launches BESS II: 35 MW battery park scheduled for 2028

ORANJESTAD — WEB Aruba has officially launched its BESS II project, a large-scale battery energy storage system with a capacity of 35 MW / 70 MWh. The project is scheduled for completion in 2028 and, according to WEB, could become the largest battery park in the Caribbean.

BESS II forms part of Aruba’s goal of generating an average of 50% of its annual energy supply from renewable sources by 2030. The system will store electricity generated by wind and solar power and release it when demand is higher. At full capacity, the battery could theoretically supply 35 MW for approximately two hours.

The battery system will be integrated with WEB’s wind and solar facilities, RECIP engines, gas turbine and intelligent energy-management systems, helping to make the electricity grid more stable, reliable and sustainable.

WEB has signed an agreement with Wärtsilä to carry out the project. CEO Alfredo Koolman also thanked the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate for subsidies supporting Aruba’s energy transition. WEB is simultaneously preparing further expansion of wind-energy capacity at Vader Piet and possible new wind parks at Rincon.
