Curaçao taxi drivers oppose temporary permits during low season

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s Taxi Commission is opposing the government’s decision to continue issuing temporary taxi permits during the low tourist season.

The measure was introduced several months ago to address taxi shortages at different locations during the high season. According to the commission, drivers were originally informed that the permits would only apply during the busiest tourism period.

The government has now extended the permits into the low season, despite reduced tourism activity and less work being available for regular taxi drivers.

The commission maintains that additional temporary permits are unnecessary under current conditions. Although the final decision rests with the government, it is calling for unity and support among taxi drivers to demonstrate the sector’s opposition.

The commission says it will shortly announce further steps and possible action to defend drivers’ interests.
