St. Maarten urges early hurricane preparation despite no direct threat

PHILLIPSBURG - St. Maarten Prime Minister Luc Mercelina is urging residents, businesses and visitors to prepare early for possible tropical weather during the Atlantic hurricane season, even though the system currently being monitored does not pose a direct threat to St. Maarten.

Mercelina stressed that tropical systems can develop and forecasts can change quickly. Households are being advised to review emergency plans, stock sufficient water, food, medication, flashlights, batteries and other essential supplies, and secure loose objects around their homes.

Special consideration should be given to young children, seniors, people with disabilities and pets. The government is also urging the public to rely on official weather and emergency-management information and verify reports before sharing them.

Mercelina’s message is that there is no reason for panic, but preparation should take place before a storm becomes an immediate threat.
