ORANJESTAD - With high temperatures affecting Aruba, extra attention should be given to older adults. As people age, their sense of thirst can decrease and the body becomes less effective at regulating temperature, increasing the risk of dehydration without them necessarily realizing it.
Seniors should be encouraged to drink water regularly rather than waiting until they feel thirsty. Foods with a high water content, such as soup, cucumber, watermelon, melon and papaya, can also help maintain hydration.
Outdoor activities should preferably be avoided between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Light-colored, breathable clothing, sunscreen and a cool, well-ventilated home can also help reduce the effects of the heat.
Proper hydration can help prevent headaches, dizziness, fatigue and other heat-related health problems. During particularly hot days, a little extra attention can make an important difference for Aruba’s seniors.
