Curaçao woman dies in Colombia earthquake; two children injured
BOGOTA - A woman from Curaçao has died after being seriously injured during the earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday, August 10. According to information reported by Extra, she was at Matecaña International Airport in Pereira with her two children and a granddaughter, preparing to travel through Bogotá to Curaçao.
During the earthquake, pieces of concrete reportedly fell on the woman, causing a severe head injury. Her son suffered a broken leg, while her daughter broke both legs and a hip. The granddaughter apparently escaped serious injury.
The two siblings underwent surgery, but their mother later died from her injuries. The family is now arranging to repatriate her body to Curaçao. Because of their injuries, the two children are not yet able to travel.
Meanwhile, Curaçao’s SVB said all patients currently in Colombia for medical treatment are safe and that medical care is continuing normally. The agency says it is monitoring developments closely and will take additional precautions if necessary.
