France and the Netherlands finalize Saint Martin border deal

ORANJESTAD / SINT MAARTEN – Nearly 400 years after the island was divided, France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are moving to officially establish the border between Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint-Martin. The French Parliament has approved the agreement, which now awaits ratification by the Kingdom of the Netherlands before it takes effect.
The original boundary, drawn in 1648, was never precisely defined, leading to centuries of disputes over permits, law enforcement and environmental management. The process gained momentum after Hurricane Irma devastated more than 95 percent of the island in 2017.
