Curaçao police step up security ahead of Colombia-Switzerland World Cup clash

WILLEMSTAD – Police in Curaçao say they will take a firm approach toward any public disturbances during today's FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Colombia and Switzerland.

The warning follows celebrations after Colombia's 1-0 victory over Ghana last Friday, when large groups of Colombian supporters gathered outside businesses, creating heavy traffic congestion and excessive noise along Caracasbaaiweg and F.D. Rooseveltweg, according to local newspaper Extra.

Authorities say additional officers will be deployed across strategic locations and will not tolerate road blockages, dangerous gatherings, reckless driving or any other behavior that disrupts public order.

Colombia advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Ghana and now faces Switzerland for a place in the quarterfinals. The South American side has drawn strong support from Colombian fans both in Curaçao and around the world.

Police are encouraging supporters to celebrate responsibly, obey traffic laws and respect other road users so everyone can safely enjoy one of the tournament's most anticipated knockout matches.
